For fast and easy containerized deployment, there now are Helm Charts for ownCloud in Kubernetes. ownCloud thanks VNC for doing the work and sharing it!

Nürnberg / Zug, 13. September 2021 –
Kubernetes is great for automating all it takes to run and manage complex container-based applications. Helm Charts allow you to easily and quickly deploy your applications and workloads to your Kubernetes clusters. In essence, Helm Charts are ready-made bundles of human-readable configuration files. Think of them as recipes that specify both the ingredients and the sequence of events.

VNC and ownCloud
VNC, a leading developer of open source-based enterprise applications, believes that ownCloud is the most reliable file sync and share platform. This is why VNC uses ownCloud as a module in its comprehensive VNClagoon Communication and Collaboration Suite. VNC and ownCloud also are strategic partners.

The need
To enable VNC as well as their customers and partners to auto-deploy and update the full VNClagoon Communication and Collaboration Suite including ownCloud, VNC had the need to quickly get containerized ownCloud deployments up and running. The Helm Charts for ownCloud that they found around the internet didn’t fit the bill. They had issues and frankly just didn’t work.

The fix
So the DevOps team at VNC decided to do what they always do when they find a non-working component: To do the work, do it well and share it. With a little help from the ownCloud engineers, the VNC DevOps team quickly created the necessary Helm Charts for their endeavor. The VNC DevOps team also enabled persistent data volumes to scale ownCloud and provide high availability. This enables VNC to deploy ownCloud quickly for their customers alongside their own applications and run fault tolerant clusters.

Available for anyone
In true open source fashion, VNC and ownCloud are now jointly publishing the Helm Charts for deploying ownCloud on public cloud and bare metal Kubernetes clusters (https://github.com/vnc-biz/owncloud). VNC and ownCloud also pledge to jointly maintain the ownCloud Helm Charts. They are a valuable resource that can make life significantly easier for deployment teams everywhere.

Statement by Andrea Wörrlein, VNC Board Member: “We are now seeing several innovative developments resulting from our strategic partnership with ownCloud. The new ownCloud Helm Charts are just the first release of many to come. We see ourselves in an excellent position in a dynamic market for communication and collaboration solutions, especially with regard to the increasingly important aspect of high data security.”

Statement by Patrick Maier, Product Manager at ownCloud: “The strategic partnership between VNC and ownCloud now bears first fruits. Together we create an open, integrated stack for all aspects of the digital workplace that emphasizes digital sovereignty. The new Helm Charts for ownCloud are the first step to allow deploying and maintaining the stack easily in modern cloud environments.”
